Australian Supermarkets Are Upgrading for the Future

From checkout counters to shopping baskets, 2025 has been a year of rapid transformation in Australian supermarkets — driven by technology, changing consumer behaviour, and competitive strategy. Here’s what retailers and industry observers should know:

2025: Major Supermarket Innovations

  • Smarter Shopping Tools: Scan & Go + Smart Trolleys

Coles and Woolworths introduced Scan & Go and Smart Trolleys in select locations — allowing customers to scan as they shopand reduce checkout time, blending digital and in store experiences.

  • Enhanced Security Measures

Retail theft has risen in recent years, prompting major chains to upgrade entrance/exit gates, expand surveillance tech, and redesign store flow to reduce shrinkage.

  • Growth of Online & Fast Grocery Delivery

Online grocery shopping continued strong growth in 2025, with Coles and Woolworths reporting doubledigit increases. Both supermarkets also strengthened partnerships with delivery platforms like Uber Eats and DoorDash.

  • Increase in Private Label/Home Brand Ranges

Both Coles and Woolworths expanded their ownbrand product offerings — with Coles launching over 530 new SKUs — helping priceconscious shoppers stretch their budgets. Shoppers can save up to ~42% by choosing these lines in some categories.

2026: What’s Next for Grocery Retail?

  • More Click & Collect / Direct-to-Boot:

Collection service points will expand to meet rising demand for quicker, contactless pickup options.

  • Increased Store Security:

Expect even broader rollout of advanced security technologies and redesigned entry systems across supermarket chains.

  • Special Buys & Seasonal Deals:

Supermarkets are developing “Special Buys” aisles similar to Aldi’s popular middleaisle offerings, broadening promotional appeal.

  •  More Home Brand Expansion:

Following strong demand, Coles, Woolworths and Aldi plan to continue growing exclusivebrand offerings.

Why It Matters for Retail Professionals

These shifts reflect a broader industry pivot toward technologyenabled, customercentric grocery experiences. From AI checkout to smarter logistics and personalised pricing, supermarkets are evolving rapidly — and retailers should be ready to adapt their strategies accordingly.
